The elegant spire of this church and its carillon, which sounds twice daily from its steeple, have long been landmarks for downtown shoppers. The hymn "America" was first sung here, and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison gave his first antislavery speech here in 1829. Park Street Church stands on "Brimstone Corner" -- a name that refers to the sermons that were delivered here and to the gunpowder that was stored in the church's basement during the War of 1812. Park Street Church was built in 1809 as a Congregational church, organized in reaction to Unitarians who were gaining control in many of the old Puritan churches.
